Once a year Calgary residents will witness a group of people fabulously dressed in all white walking in the same direction carry chairs, bags, and picnic tables. I'm sure they're all thinking the same thing. Where are theygoing? The funny part is, the people in all white are thinking the same thing. This year marked the 4th year of Dîner en Blanc Calgary.
Surprisingly, a lot of people still haven't heard of Dîner en Blanc
Dîner en Blanc is the world's largest secret dinner party and was hosted 28 years ago by François Pasquier. It took place in Paris at the Parc de Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne. After being abroad for some time, Francois set up a day for a few of his friends to meet him in the park for dinner. He instructed them to wear all white to make it easier to find each other. The dinner party was such a success that they continued to do it year after year. As it grew bigger in attendees each year it also grew in the number of hosting cities across the world. To date, the event span over 6 continents.
Host Cory Edwards, Tyler Rygus, and their awesome co-producer Mirissa Kampf (of Social Button Co) did an amazing job in selecting St. Patricks Island as this year's secret location. This location has to be my favorite of the last four. One thing I love about this event is that it takes you to beautiful parts of the city that a lot of us normally don't stop to appreciate.
I know a lot of people were concerned about all the rain and thunderstorms we've been experiencing this summer. As much as we all hoped and prayed, mother nature still showered on us. BUT I have to say the attendees for Dîner en Blanc were such good sports about the weather. Everyone came prepared with their umbrellas or clear ponchos and just embraced the raindrops. I honestly was scared that people would start packing up to leave but they didn't.
Can I just mention very quickly that Executive Chef of Market Sean MacDonald (@seanymacd) did his thing with the pre-purchased meal. You guys it was so delish I can't get over it. On the menu was :
- Strawberry Frissée Salad with Savory Granola, Vanilla Rhubarb Jam, Onion Ash Goat Cheese & a Caramelized Shallot Vinaigrette
- Grilled Chicken, Roasted Pickled Carrots, Grilled Peach Soaked in Mulled Rum, Cinnamon Creme Fraiche Barley, Mustard Greens & A Peach Glaze
- Dark Chocolate Cake, Sweet Corn Ganache & Popped Corn Caramel
Now originally the main course was with grilled pork belly but I'm sure many of you know by now I'm not about that PORK LIFE. So instead I substituted it with the moistest well seasoned grilled chicken breast I've ever had from a restaurant. Just reminiscing about it is getting me hungry all over again.
This year I had the amazing opportunity of being a Pedestrian Table Leader. Omg, it was so much fun. At first, I was a bit overwhelmed because it is a lot of responsibility butI had the best group ever. Everyone came with positive spirits ready to have fun and meet new people. I'm definitely going to do that again next year.
I don't know about you guys but as I've gotten older I've started to distance myself from the club scene because it's just not as fun. If you're looking for something more grown up where you can meet other people, have meaningful conversations (while still having fun) register to be on next years waitlist here . It also doesn't hurt to start collecting the most challenging last minute items such as :
- a 28 x 28 - 30 x 30 square table
- 2 white folding chairs
- a TROLLY!
I'm telling you guys right now get a TROLLY! It's a huge life saver. You'll thank me later. GET A TROLLY and ensure you test it out beforehand so you don't end up like me pulling a trolly on one wheel like I did this year. You can find these items at Canadian Tire, IKEA, and Home Depot. How many of you plan on attending next year?
Love you leave you 🍒
